it's thursday september 24th. coming up on "early today," breaking news oempblt. at least 310 dead in 450 injured in a stampede in saudi arabia. on the heels of a hugely successful and emotional day in the capitol. pope francis hopes to deliver a serious message to congress. and then the incredible story of one family whose faith in pope francis may have led to a miracle. and the front runners have facing stiffer odds on this thursday. "early today" starts right now. good morning everyone. i'm alex witt. we'll get toth the pope's news in a moment. but first, mass casualties in

saudi arabia. early reports find 310 have died and another 450 are wounded following a stampede. those numbers according to the country's civil defense directory. happened during the annual haj pilgrimage. millions attend the sacred gathering every year. at this point the number of injuries are reportedly rising as crews continue operations. this is a developing story. we'll have more information as it comes in. in the meantime a day after pope francis came face to face with americans to the leader of the free world to the streets. there have been 266 popes in world history. just 17 since the united states was founded. in just a few hours, francis will be the first pope ever to address a joint meeting of congress. then it is a blessing of a meal for catholic charities before leaving for new york city. 5:30 p.m. eastern he'll lead

this morning on today, a preview of what pope francis is expected to say in his historic address to congress. as well as a look ahead to rest of his visit. as the pope begins his second day, one arizona family shared a personal miracle they experienced after seeing the holy father in st. peter square. brian west has the story. >> it seemed really like it was meant to happen. >> reporter: lynn cassidy stood in the rain three hours with her family. >> we were told if he stood on a barricade in st. peters square, the metal fences. if we were there in front the pope would come by. >> the only intention was to see pope francis. they had no idea a holy act was
